Japan suffered from a severe shortage of oil, goods, and food but had a surplus of electricity due to a lack of home appliances and bulk users. The "TAMA" boasted a driving range of 96 km and a maximum speed of 35 km/h during the 1st Electric Vehicle Performance Test. 

 

1997 Nissan Prairie Joy

Unveiled at the 31st Tokyo Motor Show in 1995, the Nissan Prairie Joy marked a significant milestone. It was the world's first EV with a cylindrical lithium-ion battery power. Thirty units were sold to various entities beginning in 1997. The Prairie Joy EV proved the lithium-ion battery's feasibility and durability under the harshest conditions.

 

2000 Nissan HyperMini

Following the success of the Prairie EV in 1996, the Nissan HyperMini debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1997 and entered production in 2000.
